Guide to Buying the Best Breathalyzer

But if you do sometimes drink and drive, then some kind of personal alcohol breathalyer can be an invaluable device for helping you know your limits.
There are, essentially, two kinds of portable breathalyzer - fuel cell and semiconductor. The former is the kind used by law enforcement authorities. It is expensive, but far more reliable.
By contrast, semiconductor devices can be very cheap, can give false readings and may not last long.
Nevertheless, even semiconductor-based alcohol testers - which make up the bulk of the home breathalyzers on the market - are very useful in giving you a fairly good idea of whether you should be driving.
In fact, as technology advances, semiconductor models are becoming increasingly reliable, even as prices fall.
There is unfortunately no source of up-to-date, objective, independent reviews of a full range of personal breathalyzers. Websites like this one probably provide some of the best guidance. Some of the leading manufacturers, like Q3 Innovations (who make the AlcoHawk range) and Lifeloc Technologies have websites with a lot of detailed information. Otherwise, check out sales sites for customer reviews.
